A handicraft, sometimes more precisely expressed as artisanal handicraft or handmade, is any of a wide variety of types of work where useful and decorative objects are made completely by hand or by using only simple tools. Handicrafts in Iran enjoy both variety and antiquity. They are produced in workshops and private houses without the shadow of developed technology and mainly depending on local and traditional techniques. The major parts of raw materials for these handicrafts are produce domestically. Iranian handicrafts are classified as follow.
Woven Fabrics and mats, the most important one of which is rug and its other forms include felt making, different types of kilims, Gabeh, Zilu, and Jajim.
Traditional Textile like silk weaving, Termeh bafi, and blanket weaving.
Traditional Printing, the art of transferring design and patterns with handmade seals on different clothes that the most famous form of it is Ghalamkar textile.
Architectural Decorations as the art made of different architecture techniques that includes arts such as plaster working, stucco, and Muqarnas.
Pottery, Ceramic and Traditional Tiling or the art of making different types of pottery, golden color tile, seven color tile, inscription and mosaic tile. The most important products produced by potters are jars, glasses, dishes, vase sand some other decorative objects.
Leather Handicrafts that are the products made with leather and decorated with traditional patterns and designs including traditional bookbinding, saddle, as well as jewelries.
Metal Handicrafts that are all types of arts relating to metal including engraving, Minakari (Enamel), Ghalam Zani (Etching), knife making, repoussage, and weaving fish traps.
Wooden Handicrafts that is all products made with wood including; sculpture, sash windows, Woodturning, Bamboo weaving, Wood carving, and wickerwork.
Fine Arts are a combination of several arts that create unique works on paper or have been created with delicate paintings that includes Papier-mâché, gilded manuscript, bookbinding, traditional painting on bone, Ghahve- Khaneh painting (literally means Coffee House Painting) and Iranian miniature.
Stone Handicrafts is a kind of art that its primary materials are different types of stones either precious or semi-precious such as turquoise, marble, Jade, black and white stone, which are engraved with different tools. Stone carving, Turquoise Inlaying, and stone mosaic are among the most important stone handicrafts of Iran.
Traditional Sewing or Embroidery is the art of decorating the surface of plain textile or painted ones with gold thread, bead, and wire –ribbon with needle and crochet. The most well-known styles of embroidery in Iran includes Layeh Duzi, Sekeh (coin) Duzi, Pateh, Rashti Duzi , Filigree, and Sang (stone) Duzi.
Glass Work or Glassblowing includes the production of dishes and decorative objects made of glass with the aid of a blowpipe (or blow tube). After modeling and cooling with metal oxide, the Glass will be put into the kiln.
Marine Handicrafts are the art of manufacturing objects and jewelries with the use of Seashell, Scallop, Starfish, bone of fish and other similar material. The painting on seashell is also among popular marine handicrafts.
