The city of Chaldoran is in the West Azerbaijan Province. People in Chaldoran speak Kurdish with Kurmanji dialect, and Azerbaijan Turki. The city is known for the Chaldoran Battle; a deadly war among the troops of Shah Ismail of Safavid Dynasty and Sultan Salim of Ottoman Empire. The graves of dead soldiers and couple of monuments in their honor are still found in the city.
The city has drastically cold winter and mild weather in summer. It is one of the highest cities of Iran with Navar wetland near its border. The Saint Thaddaeus Monastery that has been registered in UNESCO as part of Armenian Monastic Ensembles in Iran. The area is the place that Armenian took refuge in the Safavid Era.
